The tribute site includes handwritten messages addressed directly to the “kidnapper,” along with flowers and artwork left by compassionate neighbors and supporters. Experts warn that such notes, while heartfelt, could also present opportunities for investigators — if examined carefully.

“Some offenders take pride in thinking they’ve gotten away with it,” she said. “Coming back allows them to relive that adrenaline rush and see firsthand the impact they’ve had on a family and an entire community.”
This behavior has frequently been observed in arson cases, but it is far from unheard of in homicide or missing persons investigations. In such situations, law enforcement must think strategically — even reading through condolence notes and analyzing who visits the memorial — to uncover subtle but critical leads.
While the rest of us may see such actions as deeply disturbed, seasoned investigators view them as potential openings to catch a criminal who believes he’s outsmarted the system.
